Great Planes PT40 Revisited
The following pictures are of a Great Planes PT40 re-build. This plane was purchased locally as part of a lot of items from a modeler that was looking to get out of the hobby. It sat in the corner of my basement for months until I got bored one evening and decided to do something with it. Some of the modifications….
1. Wing – Wing was cut back in half, dihedral dramatically reduced, and ailerons added. After re-joining the wing, LE and TE sheeting and cap strips were added along with Sig Kadet style angled wingtips.
2. Fuselage – Front windscreen area was re-built to flare into the thicker wing profile. Top sheeting was removed to install nyrods and then replaced with cross-grain sheeting. Wire landing gear replaced with stamped aluminum gear. Firewall joints reinforced with triangle stock.
3. Tail feathers – Added dorsal fin. Added 1/2″ to the width of both the rudder and elevator.
The PT40 was flown in the new configuration a few times and was then sold RTF later that year at our clubs annual flea market. If you have any questions or comments concerning the construction of the Great Planes PT40 please feel free to email me.
